Practice Makes Peace

Let's try out some coping techniques

After completing this module, you will be able to...

Practice coping techniques for anxiety and stress

After reviewing written or video instructions on how to successfully perform coping mechanisms, you will be able to practice at least one coping technique and self-reflect on whether the technique was beneficial

Introduction

Now that you've learned about different coping mechanisms, it's time to learn about how to recognize if a coping mechanism is truly helpful and effective. We'll also give you some starter guides that will help you play around and try out a few techniques. Some coping mechanisms may take some time to get used to but practicing these regularly can improve your life.

In the previous modules, you have gotten familiar with anxiety and stress and learned some coping techniques.

In this module, you will get a helpful how-to guide or ideas on how to do some coping techniques.

Tools & Things to Consider for Coping

Many coping mechanisms require little to no tools and are barrier-free to be successful in using them, however there are a few that you’ll want to be prepared for as not all coping techniques work in every situation.

When deciding on a coping mechanism to practice, consider the following:

  • Space/environment: Do you need and have adequate space to do your coping mechanism?

    • For example: Going for a walk to clear your mind may sound great, but if you're in the middle of an exam you're not exactly in the right environment to do that.

  • Tools/equipment: Is there anything specific you need to complete your coping mechanism?

    • For example: You've got a break in between your classes which could be the perfect time to find a comfortable spot to sit and journal. Make it more fun by picking out a unique journal, a cool pen to write with.

  • Techniques: Are there certain skills or techniques you should know to safely practice your coping mechanism?

    • For example: You decide a quick workout is the perfect way to bring your anxiety down and your endorphins up. If you're exercising with weights pay attention to your form to avoid injury. Interested in yoga? Watch a guided video for yoga poses.

  • People: Is there anyone else that should be present when you do your coping mechanism?

    • For example: Getting away from school and spending some time with friends is a great way to de-stress. Hit up your friends to make plans to go out for lunch or hang out at the beach.

I need something short and speedy:

  • Jot down one word to describe how you're feeling

  • List out three to five things you're grateful for

  • Name something that made you smile today

I've got some time to kill:

  • Write down your "wins" for the day (Hint: They don't have to be big. Even getting out of bed is a win!)

  • If fear wasn't a factor, what's something you would like to do?

I'm in it for the long haul:

  • Describe your imaginary safe-space. What does it look like? What does it sound like? How do you get there? Is anyone with you?
